High School Subjects (50%)

By my estimate over 80% of students improve one or more letter grades after working with me for one semester. I have tutored about 40 high school students for the entire year in all courses and levels of mathematics at schools including St. Ignatius, Whitney Young, Lincoln Park, Walter Payton, Lane Tech, Jones, Evanston, and OPRF. I have tutored about 10 high school students in all levels of chemistry at Whitney Young, Jones, Lincoln Park, Lane Tech, Niles North, Evanston, and Highland Park. I teach students that math can be done without a calculator, and this enhances speed and understanding. I teach students that doing math at the highest level means discussing critical steps of the few problems they struggle with in depth to thoroughly understand why rather than obsessing over multiple problems in the chapter that they covered.

High School ACT (25%)

Most students working on the math section with me improve by 2 to 4 points. I have tutored about 20 students for the ACT, working comprehensively on the Math, Science and English sections, with general personalized time management strategies covered on reading. In the math areas specifically, I have scoured 8 former ACT exams for the types of problems that the test makers use, I have created an inventory of repeat problems students can practice, and a deep understanding and ability to recreate test problems on the spot effortlessly to provide further skill mastery. I offer time management strategy based on your skill level and dedicate extensive time to assessing which of your skills require further practice. Understanding a problem you missed in a study guide is not sufficient, answering 8 different problems correctly that I design from a different perspective to test the same concept predicts you are ready to move forward. Among test takers at different score levels, here are the easiest areas I find to help people.

Below 18: time management, combining like terms, negatives, reading math problems, basic math formula awareness

18-22: time management, multi-step word problems, inequality rules, misapplying known math formulas in wrong situations, multiplying by the hypotenuse to find an area

23-25: rushing, trigonometry, harder geometry, writing equations of lines using tabulated data, equations of circles, average problems, multi-step word problems, humbly writing down one's thinking

26 & up: nobody I encounter has been taught adequately the concepts of sequences, series, trig identities, logs, how percentages work in the real world, multi-step geometry calculations, science scale factors in equations, the meaning of the discriminant in graphing, what happens when I multiply rational numbers, domains of rational functions, or simplifying rational expressions, humbly writing down one's thinking

Middle School Students (10%)

I have worked with 10 5th-8th graders in arithmetic through Algebra 1 and geometry. The skill level has ranged from struggling learner to home schooled to extremely gifted. I have some students that can learn factoring in 2 minutes and others who struggle to divide fractions and learn their times table. I teach tricks and also share years' worth of mental math tricks accumulated. There are tons of workarounds to the struggles you are having, whether in scientific notation, dividing large numbers, or multiplying fractions. Moreover, the common core sometimes confuses the child and he needs the material outlined and rounding skills taught. The big picture is being lost on them. I can teach middle schoolers to accurately add and subtract negative numbers in 20 minutes while I have witnessed students' teachers spend 3 weeks in middle school and high school and not teach them a single thing in these areas or identify why they are having problems or how they need to look at things differently

TAP (IL Basic Skills Test Math) & GMAT Math (10%)

I have worked with 20 teachers and teacher candidates on obtaining or retaining teacher certification in IL. I also have worked with 10 GMAT MBA-seekers. I teach most students the basics: each fraction's percent equivalency and number patterns, multiplying tricks, fractions, and writing equations with unit precision. TAP students learn basic geometry, algebra principles, how to do real world applied algebra and geometry problems, how to stop making problems harder with big numbers, shortcuts to their times tables, and doing math with numbers ending in 0, multiplied by 10 and divided by 10. Higher score GMAT seekers learn advanced quantitative skills, logic on the hardest data sufficiency problems and decision tree building, why small fractions grow raised to fractional exponents, how to dissect percentage word problems, write equations for word problems without any numbers present, estimate large number multiplication, stop making geometry assumptions, and learn rigorous definitions of factor, divisible, multiple, quotient, divisor, GCF and LCM.

College (5%)

My Process and Mutual Expectations:

I do tutoring because it offers a different learning experience that greatly exceeds the limitations of a classroom. Learning is easily verifiable with data and results that are not sugar coated or dressed up. I am passionate about thinking about math differently and teaching all the great nuances that made me love math from a young age.

Because I am not teaching 35 people, I can teach tricks or do drills that result in learning in one hour as much as 10-fold faster than a week of classes- effectiveness that I appreciate. I am ready to either provide you/your child with the necessary info in either cliff note fashion and/or with adequate detail so you learn at deeper levels. I prefer teaching people who seek to learn regardless of how the end "success" goal is defined, but I get math/science is not for everyone.

You can expect that I will travel to you and show up promptly to our session. I maintain commitments to more than 15 families year-round for our weekly appointments. To maintain high standards in my services, I require 24 hours of notice if you are cancelling an appointment. I permit one free cancellation per semester, each additional cancellation is charged at a capped 1 hour session rate. If you do not notify me of the cancellation prior to my arrival (for the first time each semester), I will charge the entire appointment time. If you do not notify me of the cancellation prior to my departure for the appointment (on the 2nd or higher cancellation each semester), I will charge the entire appointment time.
