After graduating from the University of Hawaii at Manoa with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics, I took a break from attending school to spend time tutoring before entering the PhD program. I logged close to 2,000 hours tutoring students of all age groups. I taught mathematics to elementary, middle, and high school students. When not teaching math, I like to tutor high school physics and chemistry. I can also help students who are struggling with Mandarin Chinese. My tutoring approach is to help students learn that math is not difficult. I feel that when students refuse to learn, it is usually because they are afraid of failing. I encourage them to work with the math skills they already know, and are comfortable with. I then show them how to apply these concepts to new problems. This builds their confidence so they are not afraid to try more difficult problems. When they believe in their own abilities, their minds are ready to learn new concepts. They quit fighting it and start paying attention.When I am not studying or tutoring, I enjoy movies, music, and books. I also like to make new friends.
