Experience
It's important to me as an educator to build relationships with students in which I know more about a student's personal interests and hobbies. I work to understand students' likes and dislikes so that I can tailor coursework to what excites and inspires them outside of academics. Much of what we take in in terms of popular culture can be connected back to former movements in literature, art, history, etc., and I try to bridge those connections for students. I work well in developing a lot of strategies and means for teaching a subject, and I especially find it important to speak to a student's individual needs and capacities. I attended the University of Southern California, where I received my Ph.D. in English and a graduate certificate in Gender Studies. I have seven years of experience teaching a composition class called Writing and Critical Reasoning. I integrated a lot of important social, historical, and economic themes into the course, including black political history, racial/sexual/gender identity in pop culture, and environmentalism. I've taught high school English, and I have worked with undergraduate students in the humanities, business, engineering, and communications. I work with students on reading, writing, essay editing, composition, grammar, among other things. I enjoy reading, watching TV, listening to music, and playing with my cats.
