Experience
I tutor in English, reading, and writing and enjoy working with students of all ages. As a teaching philosophy, I believe learning bridges the gap between the individual student and the rest of the world. The challenge is schools put a lot of stress on learning the structure of material, requiring memorization of rules and then drilling the concepts into students' heads. This strategy works for some kids. It's a much more engaging and fun way to learn if the student's own personal interests are included and you build from there. Language is a continuously evolving concept. The more one understands how to use language, the more someone can evolve as a person. As I pursued my B.S. in communications from the University of Illinois, I was part of an exchange program in Dublin, Ireland. I learned many approaches to teaching while there and still use these today when teaching people from many different backgrounds. Now I work at Wright College, in Chicago, and work to help students make connections with their studies that can be incorporated into their daily lives.I play guitar/piano and sing in my free time, hike, and play soccer but am a music/film/video game buff.
