Private tutor in Chicago, IL
Education
I am currently a senior at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where I am pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Writing. Previously, I attended the University of Iowa, where I studied English, Writing, and Gender Studies. My writing practice is rooted in English nonfiction; though I did work for a newspaper my freshman year of college, I prefer creative nonfiction essay writing to editorial writing.
Experience
As a child who needed a tutor herself, I have experience with how effective and life-changing a tutor can be. The tutor I had growing up helped me to think differently so that I could grow to love the subjects I was sure I despised. I would like to be that driving force in a child's life, now that I have the necessary skills and educational background. In high school, I took AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature and Composition, and scored a 5 and 4 on them, respectively. Additionally, I have spent the last five years studying English and Creative Writing in a collegiate environment. As a tutor, I address students' concerns from their very foundations--if a student is having difficulty writing essays, I will discuss with them what makes an essay well-written, a point effective, and an argument fully supported, as well as stress the importance and tactics of outline writing--instead of merely addressing grammar, structure, and flow. This, I think, has enabled those I tutor to become more self-sufficient, since I am providing them with the tools they need to ensure their own success. Primarily, my experience tutoring has been with high school students, but I am also available to work with elementary and middle school students. I also have experience working with ESL students and students with disabilities. Below is a list of relevant courses I have taken in college: AP English (Language and Literature) Introduction to the English Major Writing the Essay Writing in Community Introduction to Nonfiction Writing Intermediate Nonfiction Writing Advanced Nonfiction Writing Literature of the 20th/21st Century Topics in Literature: Women Writers Literature and the Obscenity Trials Feminist Rhetoric Introduction to Creative Writing Advanced Writing Workshop: Writing and Childhood Topics in Philosophy: Books Not in the Bible Writing Workshop: Morpholio Sophomore Seminar: Interdisciplinary Writing Survey of Literature 1: Medieval-Emily Dickinson Generative Seminar: The Art of the Essay Generative Seminar: Fictional Constructs Studio Core: Interdisciplinary Arts I can supply a full resume if asked, but I have also worked for two newspapers, The Jewish News of Greater Phoenix and The Daily Iowan, and have won three writing contests. My work has also been featured on WordPress' freshly-pressed feed, and I have been independently published four times, including in SAIC's "Mouth."
