Private tutor in Chicago, IL

Education

I have a master's degree in environmental communications and a bachelor's of fine arts degree in creative writing. I have had extensive experience with APA, AP and Chicago styles along with standard English grammar and conventions. I earned a 3.9 GPA in graduate school. All of my courses required extensive academic writing and I consistently received high grades on my papers (including a 90-page thesis).

Experience

I have had 8 years of experience as a professional writer and editor. I have worked for educational publishing companies, as a journalist and communications specialist. I have held roles as communication coordinator and manager; facilitating editorial processes and editing the work of writers working under my supervision. As a professional and published writer I am adept in rewriting, revising and coaching others in order to produce exceptional pieces of writing. I have had over 3 years of experience as a professional tutor and writing instructor. I received advanced graduate level education in the teaching of writing at Columbia College Chicago, I have been a tutor working one-on-one with writers at the college level and a guest teacher at elementary schools. I have taught teens as part of afterschool and summer programs, and I headed the writing department at a tutoring center. Since then I have volunteered as a writing tutor at 826 Chicago. My writing classes have ranged from 1 to 30 students, and from 2nd grade through college undergraduates. My students have won awards (Chicago Young Authors), raised their grades and discovered their hitherto unknown love of reading and writing. By using entertaining, preferential material and oral storytelling exercises, students have fun while achieving their writing goals. I'll help students write essays that awe and persuade, tackle all manners of grammatical miscellany, tell tantalizing tales and more. I can help with any and all writing forms (essay, stories, articles, research paper, thesis, etc.) at any level of learning (elementary, middle school, high school, college, graduate, and professional). For academic and professional writing: I can help ensure writing conforms to a required style (including AP, APA, Chicago Style, etc.), cite sources and more. I can help you track down reputable sources (and cite them both in-text and in your bibliography). I can help you read the sources to find critical information for your essay and organize these notes and details into an outline. I am extremely familiar with citation tools such as Zotero and using Evernote and OneNote to organize research, and Google Docs to write edit and revise. I can save you hours of time by teaching you how to use Zotero to generate in-text citations and bibliographies . For creative writing and writing lessons for children: I am graduate of the world famous Columbia College Fiction Writing Department and studied creative writing (and the teaching thereof) under the Story Workshop method. My teachers were best selling authors such as Joe Meno. I have published 5 short stories and am currently working on a novel. I can help with all manner of creative writing from flash fiction to novels and everything in between. I am am adept in both literary and genre style fiction. I am especially skilled at helping young people write stories and express their ideas through creative, detailed writing because I use games to disguise the work! I am available for both online and in-person tutoring. Although I prefer to meet in a public place such as a library or coffee shop, I am flexible. Please message me to learn more. My minimum in-person lesson length is one hour, however online lessons are offered at a discounted rate and can be shorter than one hour. My availability is flexible for the foreseeable future. I have openings for in-person tutoring in the afternoons and evenings most days and all day on the weekends. As an online tutor, I am willing to work with students' schedules and accommodate time zone differences--even if it means holding lessons at odd hours! I have ample experience working in a remote environment and have all the tools we will need readily accessible.
