Mary R.
Private tutor in Chicago, IL
Education
Bachelor of Arts in the Program of Liberal Studies (the Great Books Program) from the University of Notre Dame in 1992 and a Master's in Teaching from Marshall University in West Virginia in 1997. I am certified to teach English grades 6-12.
Experience
As a former high school English teacher, I taught all grade levels (9-12) as well as all ability levels (remedial to Advanced Placement). Teaching literature and writing was my passion, but I took a break to have my 4 children. Tutoring is my way of continuing to teach, continuing to help students be competent, fluid, engaged readers and writers. I can guide students through the entire writing process: brainstorming, organization, rough drafts, rewrites, and final edits. I promise that it will be fun, it will result in writing they will be proud of, and it will ensure that future writing efforts are stronger.

Hobbies
I read fairly voraciously. My preference is novels (anything from my daughter's dystopian works to the classics) but I also love memoirs and exciting nonfiction. I write on a regular basis; writing the next "great American novel" is on my bucket list, but until then it is mostly just for myself. I spend a good deal of time hanging out with my children, running, biking, doing yoga, enjoying water sports, and generally getting out of doors.
