Private tutor in Chicago, IL

Education

I received my Masters in Teaching from Columbia College in 2013 and am the recipient of the Follett Graduate Merit Award. In addition, I completed my Middle School Math Endorsement at the University of Chicago in 2015, specializing in the open approach method of teaching mathematics developed in Japan. I have expert knowledge in best practices of teaching elementary and middle school math, as well as Algebra I for 9th grade and accelerated 8th grade students. I am certified to teach grades K-9.

Experience

I am a math teacher and tutor with 7 years of experience working in Chicago area schools, including Chicago Public Schools and the University of Chicago Lab Schools. Most recently, I taught 7th and 8th grade math at a magnet school in Chicago. Teaching is my passion. Tutoring one-on-one gives me special insight into a student's thinking, strengths, challenges, and personality. As a math teacher and tutor, I love showing students that math is so much more than memorization. Using skills-based methods reveals the underlying principles of math needed for true understanding. In developing number sense, students find the confidence to tackle complex challenges independently. When students tell me that even though they used to hate math, now they get it and like it, this is the ultimate joy for me as a math teacher.

Hobbies

When I'm not busy being a teacher or tutor, I am a meditator, yogi, cyclist, and home cook. This summer, I will be attending a 7-day silent mediation retreat in southwest Washington. I'm also practicing yoga in the Iyengar and Kundalini traditions, taking a sewing class, spending time by the lake in South Haven, Michigan with my family, reading, journaling, and teaching myself French, Spanish, and calculus. You can catch me at the Evanston Farmers Market every Saturday selling delicious certified naturally grown vegetables at the Green Acres Farm stand!
