Experience

Since becoming a graduate student I have found a love for teaching. I never knew I would like teaching until I realized how much I could help students, and seeing their appreciation and success is the most rewarding aspect of teaching for me. I am currently a Ph.D. student studying cognitive psychology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Previously I graduated with a Master's degree in research psychology at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. As a graduate student, I have taken 3 teaching practicum courses, have taught intro to psychology, and have led discussion sections on research methods, and statistics. I love teaching these three areas because they are the areas that I have the most experience and can help others with the most. I have some informal tutoring experience helping others prep for the GRE, and helping students one-on-one in statistics and intro to psych, but as a instructor of the course, not as a private tutor. I have gotten overwhelmingly positive reviews from my students in my time as an instructor and discussion leader, and take pride in these reviews, as they often reflect that the students felt I was successful in helping them in the course. Although I have very little private tutoring experience, I am excited to bring my knowledge and help others in the same way that I help my students in these areas that I have the most expertise. Math and statistics are my strongest subject to teach. I have been working with statistics specifically since becoming a graduate student 4 years ago. Research psychology relies heavily on statistics, therefore I have taken a lot of coursework and have multiple years of experience in both statistical methods and SPSS. [3 years of statistics courses (ANOVA, Regression, etc.); 2 years of SPSS courses and I use this program in for my research regularly.] I have been working in psychology for 8 years now. I was a psychology major at Indiana University where I worked in a research lab and took various psychology courses. I have been in graduate school for psychology now for 4 years, each year I have taught some aspect of psychology either as an instructor or discussion leader for the past 4 years as a graduate student/adjunct professor. [Introduction to psychology (Psych 100) - 2 years as instructor, 1 year as discussion leader; Research Methods - 2 years as discussion leader.] I have taken the GRE twice, including a GRE prep course prior to the exams. I have a great knowledge of the types of questions that are asked on the exam, and how to best prepare. I also have a few resources (prep books, practice books) that I can lend during your preparation if you don't want to buy your own. My particular strength is quantitative reasoning (math sections), but I can also advise on how to prepare for and what types of questions you will see in the reading comprehension/writing (verbal sections). If you are looking for help, especially in these areas, feel free to contact me and we can set up a time to meet! I have an office that is available on the campus of University of Illinois at Chicago, or I am willing to meet at your place or a public place closer to you, whichever works best and is most comfortable for you.
