At Gary Corner College Prep Middle School, I teach English and Language Arts. As a tutor, I also enjoy helping students find their expression through effective writing. Writing can help a person unlock and share things that they are passionate about. I try to teach my students to write about what they know, as opposed to just writing about what they think other people want to hear. This approach allows anyone to become a more effective and authentic writer. When tutoring, I stress that few skills will be as important as writing when students are headed to college. Writing, of course, is more than just words being written on a piece of paper or a Word document. Good writing is the ability to convey and share complex ideas. There are writing errors that are not acceptable in the realms of higher education. Some of the key areas of writing I encourage students to focus on include clarity, correct grammar, and the ability to reason strongly. These skills should be developed in high school long before a student steps into a college class. I tutor students to understand that writing short sentences is one of the best ways to ensure that good grammar is developed.
