Education

In the fall of 2015 I will be enrolled at Northwestern University, studying Industrial Engineering at the country's 5th best IEOR program. I have a weighted 5.12 GPA and an un-weighted 3.93 GPA from Northside College Preparatory High School, ranked the top high school in Illinois. My expertise extends from mathematics to physics.

Experience

Test Scores: 35 ACT Test Score 5 on AP Physics B 5 on AP Physics C 5 on AP Calculus BC 5 on AP Microeconomics 5 on AP English Language and Composition My educational experiences spans through 4 years of tutoring services and volunteering at a Math School for children. Both of these have formed skills that allow me not just to teach mathematics, but to shed light for some on what would otherwise be an academic field full of uncertainty. I have thoroughly studied mathematical subjects ranging from pre-algebra and algebra/geometry, to trigonometry and pre-calculus, and even multi-variable calculus and through experiences interacting with peers and elders, I am able to fully communicate my knowledge to my students. With over 4 students in higher level mathematics courses such as trigonometry, pre-calculus, and calculus, I have over 3 full years of experience helping more grown-up students. However, 2 years of tutoring students in algebra and geometry have also given me the experience of working with younger students much the same way. As an individual, I myself am involved in the educational process, so I know what it is like to be a student in this modern era. Because of this, I recognize the importance of a quality student-focused tutoring experience while also keeping the material interesting and the lessons convenient. Often when I encounter tutors helping children, I see the same picture: a tutor more fixated on the clock than the student and as a result, disorganized work and explanations. Personally, I think this is unjust; as a tutor, I understand that my duty is not to sit with a student for an allotted time period; it is to work with them until they understand the material fully. I strive to make lessons interesting and move away from the idea of mathematics as simply numbers on a page. I seek to instill creative thinking and problem solving skills with the help of mathematics. Also, to reconcile the sometimes confusing world of mathematics with our surroundings, I teach by making the subject relevant to the students' surroundings, whether it be through using analogies or modeling real world situations with the concepts involved.

Hobbies

Though serious in academics, I also play sports and stay active; I like to swim, play volleyball and tennis. My favorite time of year is, of course, summer and as much as I enjoy solving math and physics problems at my desk, nothing compares to a bright and sunny Chicago summer day spent at the beach. I have also played classical piano for 11 years and greatly value both classical and modern music. My family is of Russian descent and I speak Russian, and I am also semi-proficient in Japanese.
