Experience

For two years I worked at a nonprofit after school program helping low-income youth develop a game plan and the skills to succeed in school. We emphasized college and career readiness and provided college admissions counseling. ACT English, Reading, and Writing private tutoring since January 2015. My last student, a junior in Irving Park, saw a consistent increase in her scores. After only 11 hours of session time her unofficial English score rose 5 points and her Reading score rose 3. SAT Critical Reading, Writing, and Essay -- weekly instruction to a group of 11th and 12th graders through Summer 2014. College Counseling (in addition to my work at the after school program): College Mentor: I guided a 1st generation latina student through her senior year. 100% rate of acceptance. Awarded full ride to Elon University in Elon, NC. Let's Get Ready, College Choice Curriculum: I adapted the national program curriculum to a specific summer site, made twice weekly plans, and created resources to amend gaps in curriculum and student or volunteer knowledge. Set curriculum pace and monitored progress towards fulfilling program objectives. I led a Financial Aid information session. Essay-writing: I love helping students with writing. It's fun to help students better understand the structure and components of an essay. There's nothing like the satisfaction and relief that comes from feeling like you're finally able to say what you mean. I acknowledge and respect the vulnerability that comes along with asking for help. I have a talent for assuaging fears and making students feel comfortable. I show students where they need to arrive and I guide them there. We practice and learn the rewards of thoughtfulness, attention to detail and determination. My students are quicker to employ their own skills to problem-solve and are better able to identify and use resources. I help my students develop the skills and confidence to succeed. I am skilled at motivating young people; I help them connect to themselves and find internal drive. The students desire to achieve is the key to a successful tutoring relationship. I'm a hard worker am always prepared for my tutoring sessions. I ask my students to reciprocate. I hold high expectations and push my students to succeed their expectations of themselves. But don't be intimidated! I'm fair, patient, and kind. I'm funny and able to laugh at myself. I'm human, like you!

Hobbies

I'm new to Chicago so much of time is spent building relationships and exploring the city. I love comedy, live music, and trivia nights. When I'm not out and about, I'm home reading, doing DIY projects, or learning how to cook.
