Experience
I hold a bachelor's degree in Philosophy from Mary Baldwin College and a master's degree in Educational Psychology from the University of North Texas. I am an English teacher licensed in two states, currently residing in Chicago. My strong aptitude in English was demonstrated when I earned the ETS Recognition of Excellence for performing in the top 15% on the PRAXIS II test, which is specially designed for English teachers. I have extensive experience with students of various ages, backgrounds, abilities, and challenges. I have eleven years of experience teaching English to middle school and high school students. I am adept at American Sign Language and taught deaf and visually impaired students for ten years. I also have a graduate certificate in gifted education. I tutor reading, writing, essay editing, grammar and mechanics, and exams like the ACT and SAT. I love language and teaching students to express themselves using it. I help my students develop their ability to determine context and analyze various aspects of literature and language. I teach them tactics to decipher concepts in literature as well as practical application to test questions or in essays. With these tools, they can excel on tests without anxiety. Outside of teaching and tutoring, I enjoy hiking, traveling, gardening, cooking, and reading.
