Private tutor in Chicago, IL

Education

University of Chicago, BA with Special Honors in English Literature, Class of 2013, GPA 3.9/4 Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA), Class of 2009

Experience

Test scores: ACT: 36 (composite) AP BC Calculus: 5 SAT II Math 2c: 800 SAT II Literature: 780 Most of my tutoring experience has been with mathematics. Over the past five years, I have had unanimous success helping students in topics ranging from basic arithmetic to AP Calculus. I was actually registered as a math major for my first year at the University of Chicago, inspired by the robust college-level coursework offered at my high school. In addition to a mandatory BC calculus sequence, I took advanced electives in differential equations, real analysis, number theory, and non-Euclidean geometry. I have also found my liberal arts education to be an asset in the articulation of mathematical concepts and operations. Said education is of course quite relevant to the task of essay composition. The curriculum at UChicago is very writing intensive, so I must have written dozens of essays in college, nearly all of which received top marks. I was also a writer and editor for The South Side Weekly, an alternative subsidiary of Newcity which covers arts and culture on the south side of Chicago. Professionally, I have worked at Groupon in the editorial department, copywriting, proofreading, and fact-checking; and I currently work as a content strategist for a web design firm in the west loop. As an educator, I have helped many top performing high school students compose and revise their college essays. High test scores and teaching experience alone do not necessarily qualify one to be a standardized test tutor, which is why I'm happy to say that I received an intensive two-month, theoretical and practical SAT prep training with Apollo Prep. The Apollo Prep curriculum showed me how to break down each section into individual, modular lessons to hone in on a student’s slightest weakness. Teaching subject competency is one thing, but I can also appreciate what it takes to bag those last <100 points.
