Experience
Jake Fournier has been a tutor since 2007. He began at New York University's College Learning Center where he instructed in 18 different courses spanning a wide range of subjects including essay writing, journalism, natural history, the natural sciences, anthropology, Spanish, French, and Chinese, among others. From there, he went on to serve as a Global Academic Fellow at NYU's global honors college, NYU Abu Dhabi where he was a teacher's assistant for writing intensive classes, including Social Psychology and Quantum Mechanics (science writing). He was part of a special program to kick-start the English skills of Emirati high school graduates in order to prepare them for the rigorous demands of the world's first global honors college. He also served as a one-on-one writing consultant and tutor for NYU AD students who have gone on to attend highly prestigious graduate programs and/or receive coveted academic awards, including Harvard Law and the Rhodes Scholarship. Jake left Abu Dhabi in order to pursue his writing at the top ranked writing program in the United States, the University of Iowa's Iowa Writers Workshop. He received the Iowa Arts Fellowship there, instructed at the University of Iowa, and received a post-graduate teaching fellowship. He has worked as an editorial assistant at New York Magazine, and has volunteered at high needs high schools and juvenile correction facilities. He is a published essayist and poet. Ten of his poems were selected for inclusion in a Spanish language anthology of young North American poets and were featured alongside the poetry of Dorothea Lasky and Tao Lin. Jake is available for tutoring, essay review, and editing.
