Education

Elementary education graduate with a minor in Spanish, having graduated summa cum laude with a 3.9 GPA from Northeastern Illinois University. Business bilingual in English/Spanish. Received a type 03 teaching certification in the state of Illinois. Over three hundred hours of volunteer experience in the Chicago area. Studied abroad in Costa Rica, and also traveled the entirety of Central America. Broad knowledge of 20th century literature, with a strong grasp on the English language.

Experience

The majority of my tutoring experience consists of over fifty hours of volunteer work at 826CHI, a nonprofit tutoring organization located in Wicker Park. With 826CHI, I worked one-on-one with K-8 students as part of an after school program. I also went to 'in-school' sessions, working on creative writing projects with small groups of students. While student teaching, I often worked before and after school with my students, either in small groups or one-on-one. I graduated in the top 5% of my class from Northeastern Illinois University with a 3.9 GPA. My other collegiate accomplishments include studying abroad, publishing poetry, receiving an award for excellence of writing for an African Literature essay, and being a member of the Alpha Chi National Honor's Society. I want to be a tutor because I feel that I can accomplish more when I have a one-on-one connection in comparison to teaching an entire class. I believe that kids are more apt to listen in a private setting, thus contributing to higher and advanced learning. I can also easily connect with and read kids, allowing me to better understand their thought processes and abilities. I am interested in developing learning relationships with students and their families while also becoming a mentor and trusted adviser. I am confident that I have a lot to offer and that I possess the abilities to further any kid's knowledge.

Hobbies

I thoroughly enjoy reading literature, and do so every evening for at least one hour; I feel that there is a lot to learn of life from literature. I also am interested in writing fiction, often incorporating this practice into my daily morning routine. I read the newspaper everyday and attempt to follow politics while keeping an open mind. I play golf and ride bicycle. I recently traveled all of Central America for four months, as I'm not afraid of adventure. While there, I greatly improved my Spanish-speaking abilities. I've lived in Chicago for four years now, and only recently graduated college. I loved going to school and learning and reading new material every week. I feel that my place is in an academic setting. I am diligent, prompt, open, honest, witty, and aware.
