Experience

During my undergraduate years at the University of Michigan (U of M), and my time in Ann Arbor after graduation, I worked extensively with the Sweetland Writing Center at U of M: as a face-to-face tutor, an online tutor and dispatcher, a writing tutor for the Dental School (I’ve spent more hours than I’d like to admit poring over powerpoints with uncomfortably large images of rotting teeth), and as a course assistant for three Introduction to College Writing classes. I also volunteered for 826michigan, a community writing and tutoring center, where I facilitated a weekly creative writing group for teens. Through the Prison Creative Arts Project at U of M, I facilitated writing workshops in prisons and juvenile detention centers around Michigan, edited an anthology of creative writing by Michigan prisoners, and worked as a liaison to create mentorships between community artists and artists returning home from prison. I have also tutored high-schoolers in AP English and a whole host of fifth-through-eighth-grade Korean students in English as a Second Language. During my time in the MFA program at the University of Washington I had the opportunity to teach four quarters of composition and two quarters of creative writing to undergraduates. In both of these classes (and in all of my teaching), I have three main goals for my students. I want them to learn to think critically and creatively about the world they live in and their place in that world. I want them to learn how to use language to say what they mean. And I want them to leave with the confidence and self-awareness to continue developing and expressing their own ideas. Writing is a powerful and useful tool in this world. I want my students to take their own ideas and stories seriously and understand how to present these ideas and stories in such a way that others will take them seriously too.

Hobbies

I just moved back to the midwest from Seattle, WA, and I'm having a great time exploring the city (and all of the wonderful parks here!). I enjoy a great many things, including reading, writing, coffee, coffee dates with friends, playing cards, and hiking.
