Education

Experience

Since graduating from college, I have held a flourishing private practice in academic tutoring in a broad range of subjects for students in grades three through college. Though several of my students have functioned fully in the setting of a traditional classroom, many of my students had been diagnosed with attention and executive functioning issues and/or had received academic therapy for language acquisition issues associated with dyslexia and dysgraphia. Although I am not trained as a Certified Academic Language Therapist, I have been very successful in bridging the gap my students have faced between remedial language therapy and success in the traditional classroom. My lesson plans are generally structured to accommodate homework help along with practice in vocabulary, mechanics of writing and grammar, and more. I provide skills training, modified to meet the needs of each student, in expository writing, textual analysis and annotation, time management and enhanced productivity, study techniques, and organization. Excellent references provided upon request.

Hobbies

The subjects I especially enjoy tutoring generally can be found in the realm of English language, poetry, and literature; philosophy and psychology; and Spanish language, poetry, and literature. I am a proponent of the Oxford comma. I read Walt Whitman's 'Song of Myself' when I'm feeling blue, and it never ceases to cheer me up. It is important to me that my students become comfortable enough to ask many questions during our sessions (I, like Socrates, believe that an unexamined life is not worth living), so that the lessons a textbook or academic assignment provides can brim over into life. When I am not working with students, I enjoy reading great books (I am currently at sea with Moby Dick), watching fine films (my favorite is Ingmar Bergman's Fanny and Alexander), and playing frisbee with my Border Collie, Sebastian.
