Experience

I currently tutor students in the ACT & SAT English, Reading & Writing. My students frequently see an improvement of 5 points to their ACT scores, & develop a sense of confidence, as well. Students need to learn how to pace themselves so they can finish the different sections of such tests on time, maintain a strong focus throughout a test, & answer questions correctly. I help them refresh their knowledge of basic grammar rules, read quickly in a focused manner, & respond strategically to the different kinds of questions these tests pose. By evaluating their practice essays & helping them choose an essay structure they feel comfortable using, I also help them learn how to respond to writing prompts quickly & dynamically. I also tutor in literature, essay writing, language arts, reading comprehension & creative writing. I am available to proofread writing, assist with college admissions essays, and help students with research papers. I hold a M.A. in Comparative Literature from the University of Georgia, where I taught literature & composition for two years. I have been tutoring students for the past 4 years, in tandem with working as a teacher. As this individualized work often takes place online, I have become adept at relaying concepts & tailoring critiques to students in an online format. I work well with both at-risk and gifted students. I am skilled at honestly yet sensitively assessing their development, and at evaluating what stage they are at in their learning process. I have learned how to draw their interest to tasks that might not seem immediately relevant to them, and help them develop strategies they can use to initiate further development independently. My students have informed me that my enthusiasm and vitality helps make their experience in the classroom more profound, while encouraging them to focus more intently on their work. I connect with students as individuals, & help them feel supported as they develop a personal voice. To nurture their confidence, I have developed a relaxed yet focused communication style that helps them feel self-assured in an environment that can easily prove intimidating
