Experience

For the past several years, I have worked with undergraduate students at Northwestern University and Lake Forest College, cultivating their reading, critical thinking, and writing skills. A large part of Religious Studies work is interdisciplinary, combining subject matter like history, politics, sociology, anthropology, and psychology with art, literature, and philosophy. Although content is key, and I help students understand and synthesize these subjects areas, I underscore the importance of learning how to ask critical questions, comprehend nuance, and articulate their own thoughts in written and verbal forms. From 2008-2009, I lived in India working with a large span of ages, teaching anything kindergarten lessons, English classes, youth pedagogy seminars, and adult history courses. I have over 10 years of experience tutoring students ages 4-18 in a variety of subjects, from basic Hebrew lessons and reading comprehension to Bar and Bat Mitzvah preparation and advanced literary analysis. Ultimately, I am passionate about teaching, no matter the age group. I love connecting with people through education, working with them to improve their reading, writing, and thinking skills, and helping them to find joy in learning. I can proofread and edit research, essays, and college and graduate school applications (I was a professional copy editor for many years). I can also group tutor. Prices and scheduling can be discussed. It would be my pleasure to work with you, your child, or your whole family!

Hobbies

I am always reading. Beyond my academic work, I love fiction, non-fiction prose, and poetry. I love perusing used bookstores, going to literary events, and hearing poets give readings. I enjoy sports, having played softball for much of my childhood, then volleyball into high school and college. Now I regularly run races in and around Chicago and sometimes play in local volleyball leagues. On weekends, I like to play soccer and Ultimate Frisbee with my friends by the lake. I love music in all forms. I played piano for much of my childhood, sang a capella in college, and took banjo lessons at the Old Town School of Folk Music. I often try to go to concerts in the area, whether classical, jazz, modern alt-indie, or even musical theater.
