Experience

Tutoring comes naturally to me. It is something I have always done, even when I didn't call it that. In high school, I gladly helped other students and formed study groups, and only began tutoring for money in my fourth year of college. I have over seven years of experience working at a community college "walk-in" tutoring center, where I helped students succeed in college-level mathematics (Pre-algebra, Geometry, Algebra, Advanced Algebra, Trigonometry, Pre-calculus, Calculus) and sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy, Genetics, Anatomy and Physiology, Psychology). I also helped with writing, proofreading, and editing college-level essays and research papers. Occasionally, students hired me outside of the tutoring center for more personalized, one-on-one attention. I also tutored high school students in similar subject areas. I am a certified (Level II) tutor through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). I am a professional artist, and recently received my Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where I studied painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, and mixed media. I have a Bachelor of Science from Valparaiso University, where I received a liberal arts education. I have taken coursework to become a certified personal trainer, and I am currently studying to become certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). I have extensive knowledge of fitness, nutrition, strength training and conditioning, bodybuilding, and exercise physiology and anatomy. I am patient, friendly, and observant. I recognize that students have learning style preferences (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) and I try to suggest study skills and approaches that complement each student's unique constellation of strengths. I care deeply about my students' success. My goal is to help my students become independent and creative problem solvers.
